Recent Lloyds Survey Shows Britons in Gloomy Mood - The November Consumer Barometer from Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets indicates that more than 80% of Britons expect interest rates to increase over the next year. The 80% figure is the highest in more than two years. Only 4% expect an interest rate decrease.

A spokesman for Lloyds thinks consumers have been bitten by recent rate increases and have also been influenced by recent talk of inflation. As many as 62% of those surveyed thought prices had risen in the last year and 79% expected them to rise again over the next twelve months.

People surveyed were also generally more pessimistic about the employment situation than had been the case over the last two years. A majority of those surveyed felt their job was less secure as compared to the same time a year ago.

Lloyds points out that several of these perceptions do not accurately reflect either the economic facts or the opinions of economists. Inflation generally has been quite moderate, the bank rate has been held to a still very low 5%, the housing market remains bouyant in spite of fears of a bursting bubble, and unemployment registered its biggest decline in November in almost two years.

Major Danish banks such as Danske Bank, Nordea, and others have pretty much had their way with Danish banking customers. But there is soon to be a new competitor. The UK bank Northern Rock is opening a Danish branch shortly after New Year, and are now looking for staff. They already have their top Danish executive and are looking for candidates to fill other jobs at the new branch.

Northern Rock is Great Britain's 7th largest bank and is primarily looking for deposit clients in Denmark. The bank will likely not open a lot of bank offices, but will instead will focus on internet banking.

Northern Rock bank has nearly 6000 employees and had last year a profit of DKK 5.5 billion. It is heavily into mortgages and is looking for depost money to offset the "deposit-loss" that comes from lending more than you have in deposits.
