The 80% figure is the highest in more than two years. Only 4% expect an interest rate decrease. A spokesman for Lloyds thinks consumers have been bitten by recent rate increases and have also been influenced by recent talk of inflation. As many as 62% of those surveyed thought prices had risen in the last year and 79% expected them to rise again over the next twelve months. People surveyed were also generally more pessimistic about the employment situation than had been the case over the last two years. A majority of those surveyed felt their job was less secure as compared to the same time a year ago. Lloyds points out that several of these perceptions do not accurately reflect either the economic facts or the opinions of economists. Inflation generally has been quite moderate, the bank rate has been held to a still very low 5%, the housing market remains bouyant in spite of fears of a bursting bubble, and unemployment registered its biggest decline in November in almost two years.
